My work is mostly concerned with depicting the human figure, the individual as well as groups of people - in varying configurations - and their subtleties of gesture and expression.

Watercolour is my favoured medium & I enjoy how it has something of a life of its own - not staying where it’s put (like oil paint does). Although representational, I aim to suggest appearances in my painting rather than describe them with exactness, and do this by seeking to capture the essential character of a face or gesture using as few brushstrokes as possible whilst working towards a unified image; I like to explore how an arrangement of figures can form a cohesive & expressive whole, bringing together idiosyncrasy & narrative. I frequently work up a subject or composition idea in my sketchbook first, drawing from life when I can.
